A present from Paris ? Mais oui… The Eurostar delivered us to a promising unjoyous Gare du Nord, and we were then driven through Hotel de Vigny, tucked away in a quiet street off the Champs Elysées and quite close to two metro stations, was thoroughly homely and welcoming, without finding it necessary to drape a string of Christmas cards over the receptionist. There was a fire in the grate, warm wood panelling, old books and the atmosphere of a private home. Upstairs, in our Nina Campbell decorated room; someone had provided a tray of wine, cheese and fruit. British owned since June 2000, it remains distinctly French in style, service and cuisine.

It is the Hotel de Vigny situated in what must be the most romantic location in the world. This prestigious hotel is to be found near the Champs-Elysées , nestling between two streets : the rue Chateaubriand and the rue Balzac, great names that conjure up the Romantic period in French literature. History is not random; the secret links between this hotel and the great romantic poet Alfred de Vigny, lionized by the hole of the French Literary establishment : Beaudelaire, Henri de Régnier, Charles Péguy and André Breton, become apparent as you step through the door and as you come into contact with this magical world where anglomania reigns and where the feeling for that time has been preserved intact. Vigny was born at Loches, a beautiful royal town in Touraine. His first address in Paris is one that has no equal; the Elysées Palace, no less! At that time, the Palace was a disused monument going under the name of the Elysées Bourbon. Vigny's parents rented an apartment there and the young Alfred played freely in the grounds of what is today the summit of executive power. The young boy, whose father was 60 and his mother 40, tried his hand at painting and music before going off, at the age of 10, to the Pension Hix in the rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, where his dreamy and secretive character was to emerge. The Hotel de Vigny is not far geographically and emotionally from this first entry into life. Although the hotel is very parisian, it is a hotel with a questing soul and a haven for the traveller. It is British fragrance matchesits natural discretion, all the more so since a British designer created the majority of the 37 rooms. All her talent went into giving our cosmopolitan guests the impresssion that they are coming home to their Parisian 'pied à terre', a place that they would have preferred never to leave. A TASTE OF OLD ENGLAND It was to Nina Campbell that the Duke of York turned to design the interiors of their marital home near Windsor. She is unequalled in her ability to capture and recreate the charm of the British Empire in its comfort and hue. Campbell's decors are inspired from tartans belonging to her own Scot background. In one of the more masculine rooms, she has used reds and greens, and one can easily imagine it has an excellent place to read Alfred de Vigny's manly masterpiece: 'Servitude et grandeur militaire'. Walter Scott springs to mine when one enters the three tone room of grey, yellow and white, where wood cerise furniture alternates with iron. What a wonderful place to immerse oneself in Quentin Durward, a masterpiece tha t tells the tale of Louis XI's Scots guard in the Loire Valley. The bathrooms at the Hotel de Vigny are also worthy of attention for they are simply exquisite; grey or pink marble with mahogany and light woods. They remind all who had forgotten that it was the subjects of her gracious majesty ho first invented the modern bath tub. Campbell's approach to decor is that interiors should bring joy and that is why the antique furniture and ancestral portraits are often lightened as in the blue and white suite, by a Jouy canvas; its themes of gallantry and courtship giving an air of festivity. Serge Brunst, who designed the other rooms, has drawn on the style of the dandy. He has designed what is probably the most amazing suite in the hotel; a split-level apartmentwhose lounge is capped by transluscent dome that is lit up by the Paris sky. The anglomania of the Hotel de vigny corresponds to the romantic era when the craze for things British was at it height. Then, even the dandies of the grands boulevards (between opéra and République) dreamt of nothing else but imitating Beau Brummel and dashing hither and thiter in Tilbury carriages. Take for instance, the craze for the first cigars in the fashionable cafés; this was further evidence that Perfidious Albion had stolen a march upon French individualism. Even Alfred de Vigny was under the spell. He was prevailed upon his mother to abandon his sweatheart, the young Delphine Gay, and to marry instead an English girl. It was believed that the latter was a rich heiress - her father had made his fortune in British Guyana. This marriage, the product of a passing fit of anglomania, was to prove as desastrous for Alfred de Vigny as a similar marriage to another English girl was for Alphonse de Lamartine. Thus, the Romantic poets sadly paid a heavy price for this all consuming fashion : anglomania. But Vigny, the golden-haired poet, did meet a woman with whom he was to fall deeply and passionately in love; she was Marie Dorval, a great actress of her time. He wrote magnifiscient play Chatterton for her. Glory followed. 'Pars courageusement, laisses toutes les villes' (Go courageously, leave the cities behind). This line from La Maison du Berger, one of the masterpieces of the Destinées, could be the motto of the cosmopolitan worls that crosses zones in the same way that Alfred de vigny played at crossing swords with medieval knights as a boy. It is good to have an address in the City of Light; a restful haven in romantic Europe and a place of peace and tranquility where one can reflect, meditate, dream, write and create. For, as the poet who gave his name to this hotel says, 'The most beautiful moment in a work (of literature) is the instant of writing'. FOR GENTLEMEN AND LADIES OF THE WORLD When one thinks of the consuming passion Vigny felt for women, and the tremendous respect he, this haughty loner, has for his neighbour, one understands that in the hotel that bears his nama, a code of conduct should have come into being, as it were, spontaneously, to ensure that a woman can feel at home without being importunated; where her personalityb and independence are respected by the staff as by other guests. Vigny would no doubt have appreciated that the most gracious part of God's creation should find in the modern world a refuge bearing his name, far from the bustle of the city and the stress it brings in its wake. For the property developer, Charles Bourdin, the Hotel de vigny aims to cater for business women travelling alone, who wish for personal privacy to be able to go about their day to day business in total but discrete security, as if it were a natural feature of everyday life. That is the reasoning behind this develiopment whose atmosphere reminds one that, for every man who considers himself a gentleman, every woman is a lady. The hotel owes its existence to the foresight of an American Financial group, Capital Management and Development, whose headquartes are in Washington. Female guest who choose the Hotel de Vigny will discover innovation in 'restauration' the Baretto designed by American Adam Tihany, where it is possible to have just one dish for lunch or dinner. This bar, decorated in warm coloured woods and burr ash, is steadily becoming the place for those one might call the cosmopolitan set, when stopping over in Paris. One can eat cuisine that is light and drink fine wines under a portrait of a lady-dandy by the legendary Tamara de Lempicka whose work is in complete harmony with the atmosphere of the Baretto. It is fitting that the name of the great poet should reign henceforht over the rendez vous of that Europe he himself knew through travel, sometimes under the dark star of exil, he the author of Cinq Mars (Fifth of March), l'Esprit Pur (The Pure Spirit), and la Mort du Loup (The Death of the Wolf). He, who wrote with 'joie de vivre' and a taste for celebration, has too often been portayed as a dark philosopher or a sorrowing prince. For Vigny often displayed a panache to the beauty bit the equal of a Musset in love with life, as the few words dedicated to the beauty of the moment, show: 'A vous tout ce qui rit aux yeux, qui plait à l'âme Et fait aimer le présent...' 'Loin du vulgaire âpre et fatal Vivez dans l'art divin et dans la poésie' The romance of travel ligers an instant at the Vigny. Let us reflect on his poem ' La Frégate' which expresses a desire both to leave and dream to stay: 'Qu'elle est belle ma Frégate Lorsque voguant dans le vent Elle avait, au soleil levant Toutes les couleurs de l'agathe' |
