25th International Baroque Music Festival
Venue: Hospices de Beaune and the Basilica “Notre Dame”
The 20thInternational Baroque Music festival was held in 2002
Created in 1983, the Festival of Beaune is one of Europe’s most prestigious baroque music festivals. It perpetuates the music tradition in the court of the dukes of Burgundy which is considered as one of the most spectacular and the most glamorous of the 15th century.
The artistic policy is inspired by these four principles:
A program focusing on the operas and the sacred baroque music without ruling out other repertories, the excellent rating of its productions, the reproductions and the broadcast of unpublished works based on the most recent researches by the musicologists and its policy in extending invitations to not only the most prestigious but also the youngest bandmaster of the new generation.
All famous bandmasters of the baroque music (Christie, Herreweghe...) have performed here and have appointed Beaune as the European capital of the baroque opera. Special events spread throughout July.

NOVEMBER 2007
3rd weekend in November each year,
so from November 16th to 19th, 2007
The Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune
is the heart of a true “Rabelaisienne” feast in Burgundy.
Events included are exposition on burgundy wines and wine-growing equipment, wine-tasting...
It is more commonly known as “Les Trois Glorieuses de Bourgogne” and a chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is celebrated on the eve at the Chateau de Clos Vougeot. The “Paulée” of Meursault is celebrated on the following day after “Les Trois Glorieuses”.
Among all burgundies festivals, the wine auction is most celebrated and is the biggest charity sale in the world.
The auction dates back to 1859, a year where for the first time, 189 barrels of wine were auctioned and a sum of 19,247.50FF was collected. Ever since 1924, the auction is held unalterably on the third Sunday in November and has become a yearly affair for all professionals in the wine business.
As soon as the wine making process is terminated, the management of the Hospices determines the quantity that will be auctioned. Each vintage is divided in to lots depending on the abundance of the harvest.
The trend of the auction is to give an outline in orienting the market value of Burgundy wines. However, since it is a charity sale, the bids for the Grand crûs and the Premier crûs generally bypass the usual fixed rates.
The auction takes place on the Sunday afternoon in the “Halle du Marché” and it is chaired by different key figures each year. The town’s Mayor, the Administrator, the director of the Hospices are seated at the tribune reserved for officials.
Since 1931, the wine auction of the Hospices is conducted by the auctioneer where the old and lively tradition of auctioning “à la bougie” is preserved. The bidding time lasts to an equivalent of a burning time span of 2 wicks and not less than a 1000FF. In fact, it is the auctioneer himself who determines the duration of the wicks’ burning time span depending on the bids and it is mainly to maintain the tradition.
Different vintage is sold in turns and in lots according to the order where they are indicated in the catalog.
Buyers, merchants, restaurant owners and private visitors from all over the world who have succeeded in their bids during the auction are registered in the minutes that will be published in the sales results catalog.
All auctioned wines must be bottled in the traditional burgundies wine bottles and be labeled with labels given by the administration of the Hospices. Appearing on the labels are the “appellation”, the name of the vintage and the vintage year and the buyer must add his name and his address on it.
The charity sale ends with a sumptuous candlelit dinner in the mediaeval setting of the bastion of the Hotel Dieu.
Program for the weekend
:
Saturday Evening
The Chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin
The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin is the most illustrious and the liveliest of the bacchic society. Created in 1934 in Nuits-Saint-Georges, the confrérie promotes wines from Burgundy and is based at their head office in Chateau du Clos Vougeot, which has been restored by their confrérie itself and it is the venue for all prestigious chapters held all year round, resembling all members of different status and from different backgrounds from all over the world.
Sunday Afternoon
The Wine Auction of the Hospices of Beaune
Monday Noon Time
“La Paulée de Meursault”
Meursault
, “Capital of Great White wines of Burgundy” has resuscitated, before the last war took place, the tradition of having a meal that marks and celebrates the end of the harvest by uniting the winegrowers and the grape pickers together at the same table. The “Paulée de Meursault” is celebrated at noon time, on the Monday following the wine auction of the Hospices. Every guest is expected to bring a few bottles of his wine and in certain years, as many as 12 bottles per square meter. The form and the roundness of the burgundies bottles lighten up the table of this joyous meal.
Half Marathon of BEAUNE
:
Is held on the Saturday of the wine auction of the Hospices and covers the vineyards around Beaune.
